Downtown hotels offer a central location to get around. You can easily access attractions in Banff National Park, and you’re surrounded by a lively atmosphere ideal for dining and shopping.

Here’s the scoop: book your stay early, especially during the bustling summer months (June to September), when everyone flocks to enjoy Banff’s glory.

Quick Overview:

If you want to stay in a truly iconic place, check out the Fairmont Banff Springs. It’s called the “Castle of the Rockies,” and it’s worth seeing! This place has welcomed celebrities, royalty and guests from all over the world for over 100 years. The view from here overlooks a stunning vista with Mount Rundle in the distance.

For a bit of history, the Mount Royal Hotel is still quaintly situated in the center of town. Modern travelers prefer the Elk + Avenue Hotel and the Moose Hotel & Suites. Both have amazing rooftop pools with views to match. If drinking on rooftops is your jam, then you will not be disappointed.

Don’t forget the new kid on the block, Moxy Banff, shaking things up with its fresh vibe. If you’re looking for a quiet stay but still want access to downtown amenities, Dorothy Motel is worth considering. You can also relax in The Fox Banff’s award-winning hot tub, the town’s best!

Hotels such as the Banff Park Lodge and Royal Canadian Lodge strike a balance between comfort and style. The Rimrock Resort Hotel is where you can be spoiled. You’ll be within easy walking distance of all the attractions, putting you at the heart of the action. Lets look at each hotel:

Booking.com — Canalta Lodge

Expedia – Canalta Lodge

The Canalta Lodge in Banff offers a perfect blend of comfort, modern amenities, and family-friendly features, making it an ideal destination for both relaxation and active holiday experiences. The lodge underwent a $5 million renovation, making it a modern and cozy accommodation choice, previously known as the “Spruce Grove Inn”.

Located on Banff Avenue, the lodge is about a 10-minute walk from the main shopping area, so an easy return to your hotel after a night on the town.

The rooms are spacious with trendy decor, accommodating various needs. We love the 2 Queen Loft Suite featuring kitchenette, dining area, and cozy nooks for kids. Room rates are competitive, starting at around $175 per night, and breakfast is included, offering an array of hot and cold items.

The lodge features a bar called “The Happy Camper,” promoting a relaxed, après-ski atmosphere with board games and a large fireplace. Dining options nearby include a range of restaurants and eateries within a short walk, catering to diverse culinary preferences.

Mount Royal Hotel

Address — 138 Banff Ave, Banff Alberta

Booking.com — Mount Royal Hotel

Expedia — Mount Royal Hotel

We also love The Mount Royal Hotel in Banff. It offers a unique blend of historic charm and modern comfort. Established in 1908 and renovated in 2018 (after a medium sized fire), the hotel maintains its original character while providing contemporary amenities. Located in the heart of Banff Avenue, it provides guests with unparalleled access to local shops, restaurants, and attractions; your in the middle of the action here!

The hotel features stylish, comfortable rooms with mountain views and sleek design. Standout amenities include two rooftop hot tubs overlooking Cascade Mountain and Mt. Norquay, the Cascade Lounge for drinks, a welcoming lobby with a fireplace and library, and the Brazen restaurant and bar. While the hotel lacks a pool and gym, it offers air conditioning, which is rare in Banff, and provides free parking—a significant advantage in downtown.

Ideal for couples, solo travelers, and groups of friends, the Mount Royal Hotel is a mid-range accommodation option with prices ranging from $150 to $500 per night depending on the season. Although families might find the rooms too small, the hotel serves as an excellent base for exploring the Canadian Rockies, offering a stylish and comfortable experience in a prime location.

Moxy Banff

Address — 333 Banff Ave, Banff

Booking.com — Moxy Banff

The Moxy Banff is the new kid on the block and represents an innovative approach to hospitality in the Canadian Rockies, offering a unique blend of historical renovation and modern design. Located at the far end of Banff Avenue, this $30 million transformation of the historic Voyager Inn (originally built in 1964) marks Western Canada’s first Moxy Hotel, a Marriott brand known for its boutique style and vibrant atmosphere.

The hotel distinguishes itself through bold, mid-century design and a focus on social interaction. Its playful lobby features a central bar where guests can check in with a complimentary cocktail, while the courtyard includes fire pits and pools. The guest rooms are strategically designed for functionality and socializing, with 269 square feet of space that includes unique elements like two queen beds facing each other and wall hooks around the perimeter for easy storage.

Despite not offering a traditional sit-down restaurant, the Moxy Banff provides dining options through an all-day menu served from a restored ’66 VW food truck and a 24/7 Grab-n-Go section. The hotel’s overall concept caters to modern travelers seeking an energetic, social experience that combines convenient amenities with a distinctive, Instagram-worthy aesthetic in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

The Moose Hotel & Suites stands out as a premier accommodation in Banff, offering an exceptional stay experience. Located directly on Banff Avenue (Banff Ave and Moose Street to be exact), the hotel provides amazing access to the town’s top restaurants, bars, and attractions, making it the most impressive lodging option on the street in my opinion.

The hotel distinguishes itself with seven diverse room types, including spacious suites featuring kitchenettes, fireplaces, and rooftop options with panoramic views. A unique highlight is The Corner House, a restored heritage building from Banff’s mining era. I love that they kept this heritage house intact and incorporated it into the hotel. Guests can enjoy outstanding amenities such as an indoor pool, outdoor hot tubs with Cascade Mountain views, a fire pit, fitness center, spa, and an on-site Italian restaurant.

Depending on your needs, The Moose Hotel offers heated underground parking, Tesla/EV charging stations, and a pet-friendly policy. While room rates are high, especially during peak seasons like summer and Christmas, the hotel’s premium quality and amazing offerings justify the cost. Travelers are advised to book well in advance due to its popularity, ensuring a memorable and comfortable stay in the heart of Banff.

Address — 461 Banff Ave, Banff, AB

Booking.com — Fox Hotel and Suites

Expedia – Fox Hotel and Suites

The Fox Hotel and Suites is a distinctive 3-star hotel that offers a memorable stay in Banff, characterized by its nature-inspired design and unique amenities. It owned and operated by the same company as the Moose Hotel, and in my opinion should be 4 star.

The hotel’s most impressive feature is its underground “Grotto” hot tub, which re-creates the Cave-and-Basin cave-like experience with dim lighting and rock formations. Definitely the BEST HOT TUB in Banff. Located just five blocks from downtown Banff, the hotel strikes a balance between accessibility and tranquility, making it an attractive option for travelers.

The hotel stands out for its family-friendly atmosphere, with kind staff and thoughtful design elements that include woodsy lobby decor, animal-print wallpaper, and fox-themed lamp toppers. Guests can enjoy numerous amenities such as a Chili’s restaurant, free continental breakfast, a sports bar, weight room, and complimentary Wi-Fi. However, potential guests should be aware of some limitations, including slightly cramped room sizes for larger families and a lack of in-room refrigerators.

Despite minor drawbacks like limited room space and low parking garage clearance, the Fox Hotel and Suites offers a unique and enjoyable experience. Its commitment to a nature-inspired theme, combined with convenient location and family-friendly environment, makes it an appealing choice for visitors seeking something beyond a standard hotel stay in Banff.

For pet owners, the hotel is particularly accommodating, offering a pet-friendly package that includes a pet bed, food dish, and treats for a modest $25 per night.

A standout feature of the Elk + Avenue Hotel I like is its blend of convenience and comfort. You can easily walk out onto the main street, access numerous local establishments, and enjoy a range of on-site services that make their stay both comfortable and convenient.

Hotels Outside of Banff

Alright, let’s talk about some great hotel options just outside Banff for those of you looking for something a bit different, maybe even a little quieter or easier on the wallet. If you’re keen on keeping things budget-friendly or simply want to avoid the bustle, Canmore’s got some gems.

Take the Malcolm Hotel By Clique. It’s got a cozy vibe with a dash of luxury – perfect for unwinding after a day of mountain adventures. Then there’s the Lamphouse Hotel, which fits right into the town’s artsy charm with its modern, minimalist style. If you love the idea of being surrounded by pure nature, Banff Woods Lodge offers that rustic feel without skimping on comfort.

If you’re game for a bit of an adventure, try looking a little farther afield — to Kananaskis. Mount Engadine Lodge should be on your list! It’s unlike anywhere else I’ve been! There’s a great combination of lodge rooms, cabins, yurts, and even glamping tents.

It’s kind of like they took every cool way to spend the night and put it in one spot! Not to mention, waking up to a view of the Kananaskis mountains is magic.

As lovely as Calgary is, staying there means a whole lot of driving. Trust me, my family and I once tried staying in Calgary, and while it worked for a quick visit, it’s not ideal for a longer stay.

The drive to Banff is 1.5 hours each way, and heading to Lake Louise or Athabasca Glacier will cost you even more time. So, unless you’re only planning a quick southern park jaunt, splurging for a stay closer to Banff is worth it.

You’re right in the heart of stunning views and attractions, and for families, this convenience is a big win.

Important Tips for Your Stay

Booking a place to stay in Banff requires some planning. You gotta get there early, especially around peak times. My family and I learned the hard way that the best spots, such as Paradise Lodge & Bungalows near Lake Louise, get booked up early. This place works well for families and even offers rooms with full kitchens.

It’s a quick jaunt from the lake, making those sunrise hikes ultra easy. However, remember that Banff can also get expensive. If you’re on a budget, consider visiting in November or between March and May. Staying in Canmore might save you a bit of coin, plus it’s just a short drive from Banff National Park and has good food and more affordable lodging.

Layers are your best friend here. The weather can be as consistent as a toddler on a sugar high. Whether you’re hiking in the summer or snowboarding in the winter, having the right gear makes all the difference.

Don’t forget to check your hotel’s policies and amenities. Some places even provide free shuttle services to popular spots, which is a nice perk.

Travel insurance doesn’t sound like a big deal, but it’s your safety net. Whether it’s an unexpected illness or a sudden snowstorm, insurance takes care of you.

Staying on Banff Avenue

Staying along Banff Avenue is like winning the hotel lottery for convenience. You’ve got shops, restaurants, and activities all in walking distance. It’s where the action occurs! You can find a nice café to pick up your morning coffee. Lively restaurants await you if you’re ready to cap off your day! About 90% of accommodations are within walking distance of downtown, so you’re never too far from the buzz.

Car Rental Considerations

Renting a car is a solid move for Banff and makes exploring spots like the less-visited Moraine Lake or more remote areas a cinch. Always check the rental policies and insurance options before you book.

Booking early helps you snag the best rates. Don’t forget to ask about parking; hotels and attractions can be tricky!

National Parks Pass Purchase

A national parks pass is your golden ticket for unlimited access. If you plan to hop between parks, it becomes super cost-effective. You can purchase these passes online or through the park’s entrance.

Planning your visits around these passes can work in your favor to fit in all the sights without feeling rushed.

Exploring Nearby Attractions

If you’re in Banff, take time to visit Lake Louise and Moraine Lake. These places are ideal for day trips. Hiking trails such as the Plain of Six Glaciers offer stunning vistas, and you can access many scenic spots right from your hotel.

Check out Banff’s local museums and cultural sites to round out your adventure. Don’t forget to chow down; the cuisine is as flavorful as the scenery.

Criteria for Selecting Hotels

When looking for the ideal place to unwind in Banff, keep a few key things in mind. They will lead you to the perfect place to lay your head. For example, it’s not only about a comfy bed; it’s about the experience.

Factors in Choosing the Best Hotel

Location is key. You’ll find hotels right in the center of downtown Banff. If you’re willing to drive a bit, you can also find options in the Village of Lake Louise, 40 minutes away. Proximity to attractions like Moraine Lake or trails can save travel time and maximize adventure.

Some hotels offer views that will have your Instagram followers turning green with envy. Imagine waking up to the view of awe-inspiring Mount Norquay right outside your window!

Consider what you require for a pleasant stay. Are you traveling with kids? Look for family-friendly amenities. If you have a pet with you, seek out those pet-welcoming areas; some do have a fee. Don’t forget free Wi-Fi; you’ll want to share those epic selfies.

Evaluating Property Features

Make a checklist of must-haves. Are you looking for a pool to splash around in, or do you prefer a spa to unwind after a day on the slopes? Perhaps you’re a foodie in search of on-site dining options.

Consider room types too, especially if you’re traveling with a group. Accessibility features, like wheelchair-accessible rooms, are necessary for many travelers.

Parking options can make or break a trip; some places charge for parking, while others provide it for free.

Understanding Guest Preferences

Dig deep on what makes an unforgettable stay for you. Is it the free breakfast or afternoon tea? Or perhaps it’s the hotel’s style that appeals to you?

Check guest reviews for firsthand insights and don’t shy away from trying new hotels and styles. For frequent travelers, loyalty programs can sweeten the deal.
